Developing successful public transport systems in the Middle East and Asia is critical to the future course of world history, one of the world’s foremost public intellectuals told a major global transport event in Dubai.

Dubai taxiProfessor Kishore Mahbubani, voted one of the world’s top 100 thinkers alongside the likes of US President Barack Obama, used an address at the opening day of the UITP World Congress yesterday to warn that the planet cannot sustain the same levels of car ownership in rising Asian powers as currently enjoyed by the United States.

“The world cannot have a situation where China and India have the same number of cars per capita as America,” he told delegates at the event, which will host public transport experts hailing from everywhere from Tehran to New York.

Mattar Al Tayer, executive director of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said the emirate’s recent achievements, including the opening of the Dubai Metro, had made it “an international capital for public transport”.
