The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is planning to convert its entire fleet of buses into the compressed natural gas (CNG) mode and a pilot project in this regard will start in two months, a top official said on Tuesday on the sidelines of UITP Dubai and Mobility Expo.

In 2011, the number of cabs booked by cab users through the Booking and Despatch Center at RTA's Public Transport Agency increased to 5,080,903 bookings, up by 16 per cent, as compared to 4,393,826 bookings in 2010. The total number of calls also increased by 20.9 per cent, going up to 7,256,236 calls in 2011, as compared to the number of calls in 2010.

Dubai residents were given a taste of legendary Sheikh Zayed Road gridlock on Tuesday when a garbage collection truck tipped over on Sheikh Zayed Road early in the day. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has refused to comment on media reports it plans to add two Salik toll gates to the city’s roads, bringing the total number in the emirate to six. The gates, which charge drivers AED4 each time they pass through, were launched in July 2007 under a plan to cut down congestion on Dubai’s roads.
