Dubai’s transport authority is to roll-out the use of ‘smart maps’ to more than 8,000 of the emirate’s taxis by the end of this year.

According to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the system provides drivers with real-time, accurate information about locations of landmarks including hotels, hospitals and shopping malls.

The RTA said that the technology had been introduced in response to Dubai’s expansion in recent years and would help drivers be more efficient in reaching passengers’ requested destination.

“All of our cabs totalling 8,007 will be applying the new system by the end of 2013,” said Adel Shakri, director of transport systems at the RTA. Smart maps have so far been applied to 3,500 of the emirate’s cabs. More info
