THE number of deaths caused by traffic accidents in Dubai during 2010 dropped to 153 compared to 225 in 2009.

“The measures taken by the RTA in 2009 have paid off in reducing traffic accident fatalities in Dubai last year by 32 per cent – a clear indicator of the effective traffic safety plans and educative programmes run by the RTA in collaboration with strategic partners in Dubai Police and the Ministry of Interior,” said, the CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Maitha Bin Udai.
“RTA measures taken in this regard include addressing more than 30 ‘black spots,’ providing safe pedestrian crossings on more than 15 roads, highlighting the importance of pedestrian bridges, positioning off road-mounted radar systems, closing dangerous turning points and installing traffic reducing devices on several main and subsidiary roads,” she explained.
Decline in fatalities
“Road traffic safety levels targeted by traffic safety procedures have hit in some cases 92 per cent. Measures that were taken have contributed to closing dangerous turning points, positioning of speed radar systems, and reducing traffic fatalities on the Jebel Ali — Al Hebab Road from 16 cases in 2009 to only one case in 2010,” Udai added.
“The measures taken by RTA on Dubai Bypass Road have contributed to slashing accident deaths by 50 per cent in 2010, with death cases dropping from 16 in 2009 to eight in 2010. Meanwhile, the Floating Bridge intersection witnessed no fatal accidents last year and only four injuries, as compared to one death and 49 injuries in 2009.”
She noted that deaths on Al Wasl Road have dropped from three cases in 2009 to one case in 2010, following the installation of light signals on dangerous turning points.
“Measures taken by the RTA also included the provision of safety requirements in the vicinity of 247 schools at 56 districts across Dubai, which have helped avoiding fatal accidents at school zones over the last two years.”
“Following the implementation of technical measures, residential and industrial areas have witnessed a remarkable drop in the number of death cases with some places such as Jumeirah 3, Al Qouz 1 and Al Barsha 2 having witnessed no fatal accidents since the start of 2009,” she added.
