Free rides on public transport on November 1
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will offer free rides on public transport for a day to mark Public Transport Day on November 1 for the second consecutive year. Dedicated bus and taxi lanes will also be opened on Naif and Al Ittihad roads on this day.
Overworked taxi drivers are putting people’s lives at risk
Users of taxis in the capital have raised concerns about some drivers falling asleep during their rides. Driving licence renewal at eye care centres soon
Opticians may soon be authorised to renew driving licences, a top official said. Ahmad Hashim Behroozian, CEO of Licensing Agency of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said motorists should be able to renew driving licences at “trusted” eye care centres in Dubai by the end of this year.
Heavy goods vehicles banned in rush hour
Trucks carrying loads of two and half tonnes or above will not be allowed to enter Abu Dhabi city during rush hour in Ramadan, the Traffic and Patrols Department of Abu Dhabi Police has announced.
Man tried to pay taxi with fake $100 bill
A man allegedly trying to a pay a taxi fare with a $100 bill (Dh367) found himself charged with possessing and using fake currency, thanks to an alert taxi driver. The defendant, who appeared in the Court of First Instance, denied knowing that the money was fake, although he attempted to get rid of his wallet when he saw that his scheme had been exposed.
Carpenter faces jail for threatening Dubai taxi driver
A Chinese carpenter faces six months in jail after a court on Monday convicted him of threatening to kill a taxi driver because he did not have money to pay for the taxi. The Dubai Court of First Instance jailed carpenter C.B., 46, after he pleaded guilty to using a knife and threatening to kill the Pakistani taxi driver, S.H., 25.
Petrol stations turn away motorists
The flow of petrol has been stemmed yet again as some fuel stations in Sharjah and Dubai turn away customers from locked pumps without explanation. On the heels of more than a year of periodic fuel shortages at stations, one frustrated driver told an Arabic newspaper he had been searching for two days for an open petrol station in the Al Khan and Tawuun areas of Sharjah to no avail.

Drivers don’t tell passengers about Dubai crossover charge at the outset. Residents continue to voice reservations about the taxi service in Sharjah with many taxi drivers not informing passengers in advance of the Dh20 charge that applies to inter-emirate trips to Dubai and back.
